In collaboration with Colin Reid
Ephemeral Cube consists of 256 strips of glass suspended to form a one-metre cube. As each piece of glass and its reflections move, the work shifts and changes. Looking at it is like trying to focus on the reflections in moving water. The piece has a quiet, intriguing presence, tempered by slight feelings of menace of such a weight of glass suspended so lightly. Solid is derived from sounds of glass, digitally dismantled into tiny constituent parts (known as sonic grains) and reconstructed into a self-generative and ever-evolving piece of music, which has a haunting resemblance to the sound, and feeling of glass. Solid is an imaginary exploration of the resonance of glass, heard from within the structure, rather than outside in the air.
Initially commissioned by the Gloucestershire Digital Arts Network in 2003, Ephemeral Cube/Solid was shortlisted for the Bombay Sapphire Prize for Glassmakers and toured a variety of venues in the UK in 2003/2004, including the The Geffyre Museum, London.
